North Atlantic researchers join forces

Sea cucumbers as novel resource is the focus of a new international North Atlantic research collaboration. The project is lead by Møreforsking.

In May 2019 Møreforsking Ålesund’s long term efforts to promote sea cucumbers and particularly establish the Norwegian red sea cucumber (Parastichopus tremulus) as potential novel food and functional resource have brought through another targeted project.

Thus, HOLOSUSTAIN has been funded by NORA (Nordic Atlantic Cooperation) as an application “initiating a North Atlantic Network on Sustainable Holothurian Technology and Innovation”. The partnering institutions are two fisheries from Norway and Iceland specifically focusing on sea cucumbers, Matis, Iceland, NCE Blue Legasea with specific functions regarding dissemination, and two partnering organizations from Canada – from the Ocean Sciences Faculty of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) and a fishery / processing company, with extensive experience in handling the North Atlantic sea cucumber species Cucumaria frondosa.

NORA is an intergovernmental organization under the regional cooperation program of the Nordic Council of Ministers. It brings together Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands and Coastal Norway (in external collaboration with Canada and Scotland regarding some research funding priorities). NORA generates new and develops existing networks between commercial actors and research or administrative organizations, active in the region, in order to build optimal synergy through cooperation on joint initiatives.

Since November 2019 the HOLOSUSTAIN platform already counts with its publicly available website.
